AmaZulu FC produced a masterclass in clinical finishing on Saturday afternoon in the Betway Premiership, coming from behind to hammer Chippa United 5-1 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
The victory breathes new life into Arthur Zwane’s quest for a top-three finish, moving Usuthu within striking distance of the CAF Confederation Cup spot.
Despite a bright start from the hosts, AmaZulu FC, it was the Chilli Boys who silenced the Durban crowd in the 35th minute. Azola Matrose showcased superb technique, controlling a clearance and volleying home from a tight angle to give Chippa the lead.
However, the joy for the visitors was short-lived as AmaZulu FC responded with a devastating double-salvo before the break. Athini Maqokolo headed home Asanda Mzobe’s pinpoint cross in the 44th minute, and just moments later, Sphamandla Zikhali turned the game on its head by netting his first goal for the club.
The second half was a one-sided affair. Maqokolo completed his brace in the 75th minute, followed quickly by a strike from Thapelo Mathloko. Substitute Thabiso Kutumela added the finishing touch in stoppage time to complete the 5-1 rout. The result leaves Usuthu just four points behind fourth-placed Kaizer Chiefs.
Further north at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium, Marumo Gallants showed incredible grit to snatch a 1-1 draw against Sekhukhune United.
The match remained a tactical stalemate for 75 minutes, with both goalkeepers—Toaster Nsabata and Kagiso Mlambo—keeping their sides in the hunt. The deadlock was finally broken by Sekhukhune’s Tshepo Mokoena, who tapped in from close range to give Babina Noko what looked like the winning goal.
Gallants, fighting for Premiership survival, refused to buckle. In the 91st minute, substitute Jaisen Clifford became the hero, slotting a right-footed shot into the bottom corner following an assist from Kagiso Mlambo.
The draw in Polokwane sees Sekhukhune United remain in 5th place with 39 points after 26 games. For Marumo Gallants, the hard-earned point is a massive boost, moving them up to 14th position as they look to distance themselves from the relegation scrap.
