Malawi’s FHD Premiership: Silver Strikers make winning start, Bullets draw

Silver Strikers FC made a winning start to the 2026-2027 FDH Premiership campaign on Saturday while record champions FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Goshen City Dedza Dynamos FC dropped points.

Silver Strikers saw off Kamuzu Barracks FC with a 2-0 victory at Champion Stadium in Dowa, some 80 kilometres from Lilongwe.

Rising star Festus Duwe scored in the fourth and 34th minutes to seal the maximum points for the Bankers who are chasing a 10th FDH Premiership title.

In Lilongwe, Bullets, the 18-time champions, squandered the lead twice before settling for a two-all draw with Civil Service United.

Big Bullets surrender lead twice

New signing Clever Kalambo put Bullets ahead barely after eight minutes into the match for the hosts to trail 0-1 at the break.

The Lilongwe giants brought themselves back into the game when John Dambuleni equalised from a rebound after Righteous Banda’s free kick had bounced off the post 14 minutes after restart.

Bullets interim coach Gilbert Chirwa reacted to the equaliser by eventually replacing injured attacker Billiat and wingback Wongani Lungu with striker George Chaomba and Paul Master respectively.

The changes had an instant impact as Chaomba restored the People’s Team’s lead when he finished off a loose ball from a corner-kick which Civil failed to deal with in the 67th minute.

However, Civil felt they could not afford to start the season with a loss. They replied again this time through Khumbo Mhone’s 76th minute equaliser for the two teams to share the spoils.

Elsewhere, Goshen City Dedza Dynamos came back from the Northern Region with a point after a goalless draw against Moyale Barracks at Rumphi Stadium.

Opening day drama

The opening day was not without drama as the 2026-2027 FDH Premiership official opening game between Mighty Wanderers and Karonga United failed to take place.

This was due to the ongoing standoff between the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) and its affiliate the Super League of Malawi over the scheduling of the match at uncertified Kamuzu Stadium.

Wanderers, the defending league champions and Karonga United, turned up for the match in vain.
