Kaizer Chiefs captain Brandon Petersen has addressed suggestions that his side is primarily motivated by the prospect of ruining Orlando Pirates’ Betway Premiership title ambitions in Sunday’s Soweto Derby.

The two giants of South African football will collide at a sold-out FNB Stadium, with much more than just bragging rights on the line. For the Buccaneers, the stakes are astronomical; they currently sit at the summit of the log with 58 points from 25 matches—just one point ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns, who hold two crucial games in hand.
A slip-up for Abdeslam Ouaddou’s men against their arch-rivals could effectively hand the advantage back to the Brazilians in what has become a high-octane title race.
However, speaking ahead of the clash, Petersen was quick to downplay the “spoiler” narrative, insisting that Amakhosi are motivated by their own internal objectives rather than their rivals’ misfortune.
“We’re not seeing this game as an opportunity for us to do a title blow or anything like that,” the Chiefs shot-stopper told the media.
“This game is important for us because of our race and what we want to achieve, what we want to do as a group. And that’s finishing as high as possible on the table with the maximum amount of points we can get.”
Chiefs entered this season looking to restore their status as a dominant force, and while they aren’t in the title conversation themselves, securing a CAF inter-club spot remains a priority.
“For us going into this game, it’s to go out and win the game, but for reasons that we want, not for title blows or anything like that. We have our own race to run; we have our focus, and we need to focus on our focus,” Petersen added.
Beyond the league standings, Chiefs have a massive psychological hurdle to clear. The Glamour Boys have not tasted victory against Pirates in a league match since February 2023. Petersen and his troops are under immense pressure to stop the rot and reclaim the capital of Soweto.
