Seasoned coach Kaitano Tembo has commented on his appointment as the Zimbabwe national team interim boss succeeding Marian ‘Mario’ Marinica, who resigned on Monday, 27 April 2026.
Following the shock exit of the Romania-born English mentor, the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) moved in swiftly to install Tembo on the hot seat and recalled Takesure Chiragwi to serve as his deputy.

In an interview with the ZIFA media team, the former SuperSport United and Sekhukhune United gaffer welcomed his and Chiragwi’s appointment, saying it represents continuity as he served under Marinica and his predecessor Michael Nees.
“It is a great honour and responsibility,” the former Warriors player told ZIFA media. “I want to thank ZIFA for the trust they have shown in me. Having worked within the national team set-up, I understand the expectations and the pride that comes with leading the Warriors. I am fully committed to serving the country and building on the work that has already been done.
“Continuity is very important. I have worked closely with Coach Marian Marinica and previously with Michael Nees, alongside Takesure Chiragwi. That understanding of the players, the systems and the culture within the team gives us a solid foundation to move forward without disruption.”
The 55-year-old, who also managed Richards Bay FC in South Africa, has since called for commitment from his players.
“Unity and commitment [are important]. When players come into the national team, it is about representing the nation. We need to work together, support each other and give everything on the pitch. That spirit is what defines the Warriors,” said the coach.
In a statement released on Monday 26 April 2026, ZIFA said the Romanian left his role on personal grounds. He quit barely six months after succeeding German Michael Nees who had earned the Warriors a place at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals.
The former Malawi and Liberia tactician seemed on course to restore the Warriors’ pride on the international stage after some few years of stagnation and chaotic performances.
Marinica has left on a high after winning the inaugural Four Nations championship in Botswana in March 2026 following victories over Zambia and the Zebras.
When he was hired in November 2025, the first official assignment for the former Black Leopards FC coach was steering Zimbabwe to the AFCON finals in Morocco.
Despite exiting the group stage with two losses and one draw, the Warriors impressed with attacking football built on discipline and structure.
Overall, the Romanian presided over three wins, three losses and one draw in all competitions.
