Ben Akwuegbu calls for Kelechi Iheanacho’s Super Eagles return ahead of Unity Cup

Former Nigeria striker Ben Akwuegbu believes that Celtic forward Kelechi Iheanacho should be part of coach Eric Chelle’s side for the four-nation Unity Cup tournament.

The event is scheduled to take place at the Valley – Charlton Athletic FC Stadium in the United Kingdom from May 26 to 30.

Akwuegbu voiced his support for Iheanacho’s inclusion while speaking with Complete Sports. The three-time African champions are billed to participate in the tournament alongside Jamaica, Zimbabwe, and India next month.

Akwuegbu on Iheanacho’s attacking quality

“Iheanacho still has more to offer to the Super Eagles,” Akwuegbu stated. “Though he didn’t score in the [last] game, he was in superb form. He contributes goals and assists for the team as they pile pressure on league leaders Hearts.”

He further emphasised that the 29-year-old should be invited back to the national setup.

“I feel he deserves to be recalled to the Super Eagles squad as they get set for the Unity Cup defence next month in London. His partnership with the likes of Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Akor Adams, and Samuel Chukwueze will be deadly to any opposition defence and will help the team defend their title again.”

Iheanacho’s recent contributions

Iheanacho has scored 15 goals and provided eight assists in 58 appearances for the senior national team. At the club level, he has netted six goals and registered one assist for Celtic across all competitions so far this season. The 29-year-old forward, who has represented Nigeria at all age-grade levels, is currently on the books of Scottish giants Celtic FC.

The Unity Cup

The 2026 edition of the Unity Cup kicks off on May 26 in London. As perennial champions, the Super Eagles will aim to retain their title this summer.
