Nigeria coach Eric Chelle outlines importance for Unity Cup

Nigeria national team head coach Eric Chelle has revealed why the Unity Cup is important for his team as they prepare for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Super Eagles, who are the defending champions, will compete in the 4th edition of the Unity Cup, a four-nation tournament scheduled for May 26-30, 2026, at The Valley in London, England.

Nigeria will play Zimbabwe in the semifinals, aiming to retain their title against fellow participants Jamaica and India. Chelle is scouting both foreign-based and NPFL (home-based) players for a youthful squad to compete in the tournament.

‘Platform to access new players’

“The Unity Cup provides a platform to assess new players. I will comb Europe and invite new players of Nigerian descent, alongside those who were previously called up but never got the chance to feature,” Chelle told the Super Eagles media team as quoted by Complete Sports.

“Top players from the Nigeria Premier Football League will also be considered as I will be watching a number of domestic league games from now until the end of the season.”

He added: “For the big warm up games in June against Poland and Portugal, I will feature my first team players. These are games that can push up the global ranking if we win them.”

These high-profile matches are organized to serve as a rebuilding ground for the Super Eagles ahead of the AFCON 2027 qualifiers.

The second semifinal will see Jamaica take on India, a fixture that promises to be as much a spectacle in the stands as it is on the pitch.

The Unity Cup was famously hosted at The Valley in 2004, a landmark event involving Nigeria, Jamaica and the Republic of Ireland that solidified the competition’s reputation for blending elite sport with cultural celebration.
