A resilient display from goalkeeper Denis Kiggundu ensured Vipers SC left Butema with a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Kitara FC in the first leg of the Uganda Cup semi-finals.
The Venoms had their shot-stopper to thank after he produced a string of crucial interventions in a tense and physical encounter, frustrating the hosts throughout the contest.
Kiggundu was quickly drawn into action early on, reacting sharply inside the opening minutes to deal with a dangerous delivery into the area. His opposite number, Meddie Kibirige, was equally alert moments later, keeping out Glodi Beyuku as both sides showed attacking intent.
The first half, however, largely belonged to the Vipers goalkeeper. In the 35th minute, he pulled off a remarkable double save to deny Patrick Kaddu and Yunus Sibira in quick succession, preserving parity for the visitors.
Tempers flared before the break when Kitara captain Jasper Aheebwa lunged into a risky challenge on Milton Karisa. The referee opted for a yellow card, much to Vipers’ relief, though Karisa was unable to continue and was replaced by Marvin Youngman.
After the restart, Kitara continued to press, but Kiggundu remained unbeatable. He produced several more key saves, including multiple stops to deny Living Kabon, capping off a standout individual performance.
Vipers nearly snatched a winner late on, with substitute Yunus Sentamu testing Kibirige, but the hosts’ goalkeeper was equal to the effort as the stalemate persisted.
