Sundowns crush Polokwane City to extend lead at the summit

Mamelodi Sundowns took a massive stride toward defending their Betway Premiership title on Sunday afternoon, dismantling Polokwane City FC 3-0 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.

The victory moves the Brazilians to 64 points, opening a commanding five-point gap over second-placed Orlando Pirates.

While Pirates retain a game in hand, the ruthless nature of Sundowns’ performance sends a clear message to the chasing pack. For Polokwane City, the defeat keeps them rooted in sixth place, missing out on a chance to break into the top four.

Sundowns dictated the tempo from the opening whistle, with Teboho Mokoena pulling the strings in midfield. The pressure finally told in the 33rd minute when Mokoena delivered a pinpoint cross into the heart of the box. Iqraam Rayners rose highest, guiding a clinical header into the bottom right corner to give the hosts a deserved lead.

Sundowns Pull Clear: Five-Point Gap Opens at the Top

Polokwane City struggled to find their rhythm, often caught offside by a disciplined Sundowns backline led by Keanu Cupido. Despite a late flurry of corners for the visitors before the break, the Brazilians held firm to go into the tunnel a goal up.

The home side doubled their advantage just eleven minutes after the restart. In a swift attacking move, the veteran Themba Zwane turned provider, slipping a pass to Tashreeq Matthews. The striker made no mistake, firing a right-footed shot from the left side of the box into the far corner to make it 2-0.

Polokwane City were handed a lifeline in the 65th minute when Aubrey Modiba was penalised for a handball in the area. However, Puleng Marema’s resulting penalty sailed high and wide to the left, deflating the visitors’ hopes of a comeback.

Sundowns’ bench depth proved decisive as the game wound down. After a series of tactical changes, including the introduction of Nuno Santos and Brayan Léon, the hosts added a third in the 85th minute. Léon turned provider, finding Santos on the left side of the box, who expertly slotted the ball into the bottom right corner to cap off a 3-0 demolition.

The closing stages were marred by minor injuries and a string of fouls, but the result was never in doubt. Sundowns now look ahead to their final three fixtures of the campaign with the finish line firmly in sight.
