Moussa Ndiaye targets Senegal World Cup spot after Schalke rise

Senegalese defender Moussa Ndiaye has firmly set his sights on the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a blistering run of form with German Bundesliga returnees, Schalke 04.

After a superb second half of the season with the Royal Blues—which culminated in a dramatic promotion and the 2. Bundesliga title—the left-back is acutely aware that his recent performances could reignite his chances of being selected for the Teranga Lions’ national team.

When questioned about his international aspirations in a recent interview with Sportnewsafrica, the defender, who honed his craft within the esteemed ranks of RSC Anderlecht, openly acknowledged his burning ambition to represent his country on the world stage.

“Every player dreams of playing in a World Cup. However, we have a coach who must make difficult choices,” Ndiaye remarked. “He has to finalise his squad and, by necessity, leave some players out. Of course, if it were entirely up to me, I would select myself,” he added with a smile.

“Personally, I simply try to give my absolute best on the pitch, ensuring I am as effective as possible in my position. My focus remains on staying disciplined and letting the technical team make their ultimate decisions.”

Aware of the immense depth and fierce competition within the Senegalese squad, the 23-year-old understands that a seat on the plane to the tournament in North America is far from guaranteed.

“In Senegal, the competition for places is fierce in almost every position, so the selection process is never easy. Those who aren’t selected will inevitably feel disappointed. We leave everything in the hands of the coach and his staff, trusting them to make the best choices for the success of Senegal.”

The former Barcelona B graduate has been a true revelation for Schalke since joining the club on loan from the Belgian Jupiler Pro League mid-season. His arrival provided the defensive stability and attacking outlet needed to secure top-flight football for the Gelsenkirchen-based side.

The former Senegal U-20 and U-23 standout made 12 vital appearances in the second division, contributing two assists as Schalke successfully navigated their path back to the Bundesliga. As he prepares for life in the German top flight, Ndiaye’s primary objective remains clear: maintaining the consistency required to catch the eye of the national team selectors ahead of the mundial.
