Russian Cup: Wooh and Djiku secure another clean sheet as Spartak Moscow advance to final

Spartak Moscow’s African central defensive duo rose to the occasion again on Wednesday in the Russian Cup as Ghana national team veteran Alexander Djiku and Cameroonian defender Christopher Wooh helped their club overcome rivals CSKA Moscow to reach the final.

After a clean sheet against Zenit St. Petersburg in the semifinals of the competition’s “Regions Path”, where the two defenders converted in the victorious penalty kick shootout following a 0-0 draw, the defense was sharp once again. The result means that Spartak are the champions of the “Regions Path” and will face the winner of the “Russian Premier League Path” in the final on May 24.

They will face either Krasnodar or Dynamo Moscow, who will play the second leg of the “RPL Path” on Thursday after drawing 0-0 in the first leg. The final will take place at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.

A strong start secured the victory for “The People’s Team”. A spectacular long range shot from Ruslan Litvinov put the hosts ahead at the Lukoil Arena, setting the stage for an even and fierce clash between rivals from the capital.

CSKA had their chances after struggling at the start. Djiku arrived just in time to disrupt Tamerlan Musaev’s attempt after the forward was on hand to collect a rebound in the 50th minute. Wooh scrambled back to challenge a shot attempt that went off the post in the 63rd minute.

But the comeback effort from CSKA came up short in the end and Spartak continued to be impenetrable on the defensive end. They will now focus on achieving a top-3 finish in their final two league matches before the cup final, with two points separating them from another Moscow rival, Lokomotiv.
