UPL: Achayi marks return as KCCA cruise past Maroons in Lugogo show

KCCA FC produced a commanding second-half display to brush aside Maroons FC 3-0 under the floodlights at MTN Omondi Stadium on Thursday night, strengthening their push toward the top end of the Uganda Premier League table.

With three matches still remaining this season, the Kasasiro Boys moved onto 55 points after a performance built on discipline, efficiency, and late attacking quality.

The encounter began cautiously, with both sides battling for control in midfield. KCCA, however, looked the more threatening side early on and nearly found the opener inside ten minutes when Shafik Kwikiriza delivered a dangerous ball into the area, only for Ashraf Mugume to fire over the crossbar.

As the intensity of the contest increased, referee Joshua Duula was forced into action, cautioning Gavin Kizito and Godwin Kitagenda following a series of robust challenges.

KCCA continued to push and came close again midway through the opening half. A curling set piece from Sserunjogi appeared destined for the top corner before Maroons goalkeeper Tamale stretched brilliantly to tip the effort away.

The breakthrough finally arrived moments before halftime. Kizito launched a long delivery forward which Ivan Ahimbisibwe intelligently nodded into the path of Ashraf Mugume, and the midfielder made no mistake as he headed past the goalkeeper to hand KCCA a deserved lead heading into the break.

Maroons returned from halftime with renewed urgency and nearly pulled level in the 68th minute, but Mugolofa Mutwalibi produced an outstanding save to deny Raymond Walugembe from close range.

KCCA put the result beyond doubt

That moment proved decisive as KCCA gradually regained control of proceedings. Herbert Achayi was introduced off the bench, and the experienced midfielder instantly changed the tempo of the game. After sustained pressure and several bookings for the visitors, Achayi announced his return in spectacular fashion.

In the 87th minute, he picked up possession from distance, drove confidently through midfield, and rifled a stunning long-range strike into the bottom corner to double KCCA’s advantage.

The hosts were not done yet. Three minutes later, Mugume turned provider after slipping a neat pass into Ivan Ahimbisibwe, who calmly finished to seal the victory and take his league tally to 13 goals for the campaign.

KCCA comfortably managed the closing moments, introducing Joao Gabriel, Axel Mezui, and Emmanuel Anyama late on as they saw out an emphatic home triumph.

Ashraf Mugume, who registered a goal and an assist, dictated much of the attacking rhythm throughout the evening and deservedly walked away with the Player of the Match accolade.

Attention now shifts to next Wednesday’s trip to Bombo, where KCCA will face UPDF FC hoping to carry the same momentum into another crucial league fixture.
