South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns’ battle-hardened goalkeeper Denis Onyango has rightly described their remaining three Premier Soccer League (PSL) and CAF Champions League fixtures as both cup finals, with no margins of error left.
Looking at what is at stake and how the ties are delicately balanced for the Premier Soccer League (PSL) heavyweights, one cannot agree more with the 2016 Champions League winner, who is yearning for another star on the Masandawana badge.
The Premier Soccer League defending champions face TS Galaxy at Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga on Tuesday, 12 May 2026 to wind up the hectic PSL season.
The decisive domestic tie kicks off at 7:30m pm Southern African Time live on SuperSport Television.
Ahead of their fixture against the Rockets, Onyango said they will approach the PSL game as a cup final considering that the title is at stake. They are three points ahead of second place Orlando Pirates, who have two games in hand.
“The boys are nice and ready for our last league game that plays on Tuesday. We are all geared up and ready to fight until the last whistle,” the Ugandan told Sundowns’ website.
“Every game counts for the club, regardless of how difficult it is. We have to give our best—every game is a final. We have to finish the season on a high, regardless of how things are in the league.”
So tight are the PSL title race margins, Masandawana have no option but to collect three points from the Rockets lest the holders hand the initiative to close pursuers, Orlando Pirates, who are in second place with two games in hand.
The Pretoria-based side smashed Siwelele FC 7-4 on Saturday aware of the need to ensure a healthy goal aggregate.
In the Rockets’ camp, they drew 1-1 with Chippa United to make it two games without a win for caretaker coach Benard Parke. The Rockets also lost 2-1 to Durban City in the Nedbank Cup final on 2 May.
A loss for the Pretoria-based giants on Tuesday will give the Buccaneers the luxury of just needing three points and a healthy goal aggregate from their remaining PSL fixtures against Durban City on Saturday, 16 May and Orbit College FC on 23 May, to claim the elusive championship.
On the other hand, a draw for Miguel Cardoso’s outfit on Tuesday will leave Abdeslam Ouaddou’s men with two options of either needing maximum six points or just four points from the remaining two assignments.
After the PSL game, focus will fully shift to the CAF Champions League crunch final, first leg match against AS FAR scheduled for Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Friday, 15 May 2024.
The second leg will take place in Rabat on 24 May. All the three games are indeed cup finals for the yellow nation.
