Boniface joined fellow Bundesliga club Werder Bremen on a season-long loan on 1 September, the last day of the summer transfer window.
In a statement, the club confirmed: “Schmidt (Leeds United) is returning to his parent club, just like Maximilian Wöber (Leeds United) and Victor Boniface (Bayer 04 Leverkusen). Wöber and Boniface were unable to attend the farewell due to illness.”
According to the club, Boniface will not be able to play in the final game after falling ill. The statement concluded: “SV Werder Bremen wishes all of the players, as well as Marita, every success for the future.”
Boniface has now taken to his social media pages to confirm the exit.
He wrote: “Wow, crazy season for me. A lot had happened. Just want to say thank you very much to fans and staff and players.”
He has missed the club’s last 20 Bundesliga matches and has not played since December 7. Across 11 appearances, he failed to score but provided two assists.
His campaign ultimately ended early in the spring of 2026 due to knee issues. The loan move was designed to provide regular minutes for the Nigerian striker after a collapsed move to AC Milan.
