South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has explained what the team wants to achieve when they take on Uganda in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying fixture on Friday.
Both Bafana and Uganda qualified for the 35th edition of the AFCON in Morocco with two matches to spare after South Sudan defeated Congo 3-2 in another Group K fixture at Juba National Stadium on Thursday.
Ahead of their matchday five fixture against Uganda Cranes at Namboole Stadium, Bafana are sitting second in the group with eight points, two less leaders Uganda, while Congo are third with four and South Sudan last with three points.
Despite sealing the qualification ticket, the 72-year-old Broos, who became the first ever Bafana coach to qualify for back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations, is not satisfied yet as he wants to beat the Cranes and finish at the top of the pile.
“We want to win the game, we want to win to end top of the group and that means we have to beat Uganda. So [qualifying] does not change anything for us. I hope that it will be a nice game and a good game,” Broos told reporters ahead of the Uganda fixture.
Bafana goalkeeper Ronwen Williams said: “We want to finish the year on a positive note. We have had a wonderful year, a successful year, so we want to keep building on that. It is going to be a tough one [against Uganda], we are excited.”
Bafana will wind up their group matches against South Sudan at Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday, November 19.
