Ligue 2 club Amiens SC part ways with manager Omar Daf

French Ligue 2 side the club SC have parted ways with manager Omar Daf following a string of unimpressive performances in the current campaign.

The Unicorns officially announced on Thursday the departure of the former Senegalese international, who arrived at the club in 2023 with the aim of turning the fortunes of the club around.

The club based in northern France have posted poor performances in their last six games, suffering four losses, one draw and one win under the guidance of the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations runner-up and 2002 World Cup participant.

They are currently engaged in a relegation battle, occupying 16th place with 23 points, four points deep in the relegation zone. Julien Ielsch and Serge Costa will take interim charge of the team, pending the appointment of a substantive coach.

A statement by the club read: “the club SC formalizes the retirement of Omar Daf from his position as coach of the professional team as of today.

The club would like to thank Omar for his commitment, professionalism and work accomplished since his arrival, as well as for his investment in the service of the club and the group.

Pending new arrangements, the management of the professional group is already ensured by Julien Ielsch and Serge Costa.”

The French side is the third French club managed by Omar Daf, after stints at Sochaux and Dijon.

The 46-year-old played predominantly as a right-back for Senegal, featuring in the finals of the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations where the Teranga Lions lost the final 2-3 in a penalty shootout to Cameroon in Mali.

He was capped 55 times for the two-time African champions and previously played club football for Sochaux, Brest, and Belgian club Westerlo.

The departure of Omar Daf marks another difficult chapter for the Ligue 2 club as they attempt to stabilize their season. Expectations were high when the Senegalese tactician arrived at the club in 2023, with management hoping his experience would help improve results and guide the team toward a more competitive position in the French second division.

However, football results can often determine the fate of coaches, and the recent run of poor performances appears to have forced the club’s leadership to make a difficult decision. The team’s struggles in the league table, combined with increasing pressure from supporters, created a challenging environment for the technical staff.

For the interim coaches now in charge, the immediate objective will be to restore confidence within the squad. Improving defensive organization and converting scoring opportunities will be key if the team hopes to climb away from the relegation zone in the remaining matches of the season.

Meanwhile, attention will also turn to the club’s management as they begin the search for a new permanent head coach. The appointment of the next manager will be crucial, as the team looks to rebuild stability and avoid the threat of relegation.

Despite the difficult ending to his tenure, the coaching experience gained in France will likely remain valuable for Omar Daf, who has already managed several clubs and built a reputation as a disciplined and determined coach. Many observers believe he could soon find another opportunity to continue his managerial career in European or African football.
