André Onana reacts after Turkish Cup heroics with Trabzonspor

Cameroonian goalkeeper André Onana discussed his excellent performance that gave club side Trabzonspor a penalty kick shootout victory against Samsunspor in the Turkish Cup quarterfinals on Thursday.

Onana, who is on loan from English Premier League club Manchester United, saved three crucial penalty kicks during the shootout after the entire game plus extra time ended goalless.

The 30-year-old’s bravery secured a 3-1 shootout victory for Trabzonspor and the former Ajax shot stopper shared his thoughts on the victory.

“Big moments like this remind people of my level. Penalty shootouts are all about confidence, and I always believe in myself.”

Onana, who previously played for Italian Serie A side Inter Milan, says his loan move to Turkey helped his career.

“My loan to Trabzonspor helped me a lot. I just needed to play, to feel important again, and to show what I’m capable of. For now, I have 3 weeks left in this beautiful country. I’m going on vacation with my family. Then, as our president said, some things might change. We’ll see. Manchester United remains my club, and I feel like I still have things to achieve there.”

“I’m only on loan, so of course, coming back and fighting for my place is in the back of my mind. I left amid criticism, but sometimes you leave to come back stronger, and I think I’m proving that right now.”

Onana has been phenomenal this season, chalking 26 league appearances, conceding 38 goals and keeping six clean sheets.

The victory puts Trabzonspor closer to lifting their 10th Turkey Cup after missing out on the trophy in the last two years.

They will face Gençlerbirliği in the semi-finals of the competition with the match scheduled to take place between May 12–14.

The 53-time capped Indomitable Lion will return to Manchester United at the end of his loan spell.
