Wrexham AFC goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has expressed his excitement after receiving the opportunity to represent Nigeria’s Super Eagles, describing his invitation to the national team as a dream come true following the completion of his international switch of allegiance from England.
Okonkwo, who has previously represented England at the youth level, is set to be among the new faces invited to the Super Eagles camp as Nigeria continues preparations for the upcoming Unity Cup.

Speaking in an interview with Super Eagles media, the shot-stopper said he was honored to receive the chance to represent Nigeria and revealed that he had long anticipated the moment.
“It’s an honour to be even given the opportunity to play for your country. I’m so excited. I can’t wait. I’ve been wanting this moment for quite a while now and to finally have the opportunity is incredible.”
Okonkwo also disclosed that discussions about his international future began last summer after positive talks with the Super Eagles coaching crew, leading to his decision to switch allegiance from England to Nigeria.
“It all started from last summer. I spoke to the manager and the goalie coach and they showed their interest in me and the conversations were very positive. Ever since that point, I’ve been trying to get my switch done from English to Nigerian.”
While expressing his excitement about joining the squad, the 24-year-old stated the importance of building a good relationship with the fans, acknowledging the need to connect with everyone.
“The most important relationship I want to build with them is trust. Obviously, that takes time but I want to become a consistent performer for the country. I want to be someone who they can trust in their goal for every game. But like I said, that’s a process.
Okonkwo further highlighted the importance of integrating into the team and understanding the Super Eagles’ style of play as he begins his international career with Nigeria.
“To get there, I first have to integrate with the team, learn the way we play, connect with my defenders, the attackers, connect with everyone on the pitch. I know it’s a process but I want to try and work towards this and build that trust with the fans.”
His arrival comes at a crucial period for the Super Eagles, as the team’s goalkeeping department is highly competitive, particularly with current Super Eagles number one Stanley Nwabali currently without a club.
