Defending CAF Women's Champions League winners Mamelodi Sundowns have sensationally been eliminated from the 2024 edition following Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Nigerian champions Edo Queens. Sundowns led until deep into second half stoppage time when Queens star Edem Peace Essien provided a dramatic equalizer, sparking frenzied celebrations from the entire team. This tournament marks the first time that Sundowns have ever lost in the group stage, much less eliminated from the competition at this point.
Furthermore, Edo Queens secured top spot in Group B when Mary Mamudu scored the winner soon after. Sundowns opened the scoring in the first half through Melinda Kgadiete and appeared set to hold on for the victory after goalkeeper Andile Dlamini produced an excellent save to deny a penalty kick from Essien. However, Edo Queens continued to push hard and were rewarded with the late equalizer before winning the match outright.
In the other match played simultaneously, Egypt's FC Masar defeated Ethiopian club CBE by a 2-1 score to finish second in Group B. Goals from Sandrine Niyonkuru and Yassmin Zezo gave Masar a two-goal lead with CBE finding the goal late for a consolation and their first goal of the competition. Masar and Edo Queens finish level on seven points but Queens had a superior goal difference.
