The decision, which was reached on Friday, saw NEC member Abdullahi Yussuf Ibrahim and acting CEO Dennis Gicheru also ordered to step aside to allow for investigations into the allegations.
“With immediate effect, Hussein Mohammed to step aside from his role and position as President of Football Kenya Federation, Abdullahi Ibrahim to step aside from his role as nominated member of FKF NEC committee, and Dennis Gicheru to step aside from his position as the acting secretary general, so as to allow for investigations,” read part of the statemen from NEC members.
“Misappropriation of public funds, including alleged theft of approximately Kh42,000,000 from the CHAN bank account, serious breaches of the Public Procurement and Assets Disposal Act 2015 and Public Finance Management Act, including non-competitive procurement of goods and services and conflict of interest.”
Following Mohammed’s suspension, former Harambee Stars midfielder Mariga, who Champions League trophy with Inter Milan, was installed as the acting president of the federation and told to start mandate with immediate effect.
“The Deputy President of FKF Macdonald Mariga to take over the roles of and responsibilities of President of FKF in an acting capacity with immediate effect pending completion of investigations and forensic audit into the affairs of Football Kenya Federation,” the statement continued.
Mariga was further mandated to convene an urgent National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting. The NEC members further asked for all bank accounts belonging to FKF, and under the name of Hussein Mohammed, to be frozen with immediate effect.
However, in a swift rejoinder, Mohammed protested the verdict of the NEC members, which suspended him to allow investigations into his alleged involvement in the KSh 42 million CHAN scandal.

According to Mohammed, it is the President, who is supposed to convene an NEC meeting after a request from at least 50 percent of members, and such a meeting should be convened within 21 days.
In a statement, he said the NEC meeting was not convened in line with the FKF Constitution 2017, noting he neither called the meeting nor received backing from at least 50 percent of NEC members as required.
“The purported meeting held on April 24, 2026, was not convened in accordance with the FKF Constitution and is therefore irregular, unlawful and unconstitutional. Consequently, any decisions arising from it are null and void,” he stated.
“I did not convene any NEC meeting, nor did I receive any request to convene such a meeting in accordance with the above provisions.”
He termed the NEC meeting that was convened, which led to his suspension, as unconstitutional and unlawful. Mohammed’s suspension comes just when Kenya is starting to gain the confidence of FIFA and CAF, with Kenya recently being trusted with FIFA Series Women tournament on top of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) which is only months away.
