Gabon: Search for new national team coach stalled by internal dispute

The Gabon national team has yet to appoint a new head coach after a deteriorating relationship between the Gabonese Football Federation (FEGAFOOT) and the nation’s Ministry of Sports. The Panthers, as they are nicknamed, were led by an interim coach during their FIFA Series encounter in Uzbekistan in March 2026.

The federation relieved former head coach Thierry Mouyouma after three years at the helm following a poor 2025 Africa Cup of Nations outing, during which the government barred some players from the national team. Anicet Yala took over the Panthers on an interim basis but left his position on March 30 after the expiration of his short-term contract.

Local publication L’Union claimed that the recent fallout between the federation and the government has negatively impacted the hiring process of a new coach. The government has recently interrupted the electoral process of Fegafoot. A proposed election, which was slated for April 18, could not take place due to the interruption.

Three coaches were identified for the Gabon job, including former Fulham player Luis Boa Morte. Anthony Da Silva and Landry Chauvin were the other contenders for the role. The government declined the three coaches, citing a lack of top-level experience. Boa Morte recently coached Guinea-Bissau after leaving his assistant role at Premier League side Fulham.

With the June international friendlies fast approaching, FEGAFOOT is tasked with mending its relationship with the Ministry of Sports. In Gabon, the Ministry of Sports often covers the salary of the national team head coach, and this financial responsibility gives it leverage in the selection process.
