Betway Premiership side Marumo Gallants have officially sidelined head coach Alexandre Lafitte, suspending the 28-year-old Frenchman with immediate effect pending a disciplinary hearing.
Lafitte’s future at the club looks increasingly bleak following a dual crisis of poor results on the pitch and alleged contractual breaches off it. The decision comes less than 24 hours after Bahlabane Ba Ntwa suffered a demoralising defeat to Durban City FC, extending a dismal winless streak that has haunted the club since December 2025.
In an official statement released on Monday, club spokesperson Sello Nduna revealed that the suspension of Alexandre Lafitte isn’t purely down to the team’s slide down the table.
“The suspension follows issues relating to a failure to comply with contractual duties,” Nduna stated. “The club has also not been performing to the expected standard in recent fixtures. The club takes matters of governance, professionalism, and accountability seriously.”
While the “contractual duties” remain unspecified, the timing suggests the board’s patience snapped following Sunday’s loss. Despite an early-season honeymoon period—which saw Lafitte lead the side to the Carling Knockout Cup final, eventually losing 1-0 to Orlando Pirates—the wheels have since come off for the Limpopo-based outfit.
Lafitte arrived at the start of the campaign with high expectations, filling the void left by Abdeslam Ouaddou, who departed for a role at Pirates. His tactical approach initially earned plaudits as Gallants surged through the cup competition. However, seven matches without a victory have seen the club’s league ambitions plummet.
The club’s hierarchy, led by Chairman Abram Sello, is expected to move swiftly to steady the ship. While the internal disciplinary process unfolds, an interim coach is expected to be named “in due course” to prepare the squad for their upcoming fixtures.
For now, the club has assured supporters that operations remain normal, though the looming exit of one of the league’s youngest coaches marks yet another turbulent chapter for the Gallants.
Betway Premiership side Marumo Gallants have officially sidelined head coach Alexandre Lafitte, suspending the 28-year-old Frenchman with immediate effect pending a disciplinary hearing.
The club confirmed the decision on Monday following growing concerns about both the team’s poor performances on the pitch and alleged contractual issues involving the young coach. Lafitte’s future at the Limpopo-based club now appears uncertain as the internal disciplinary process begins.
The suspension comes less than 24 hours after Gallants suffered a disappointing defeat to Durban City FC, a result that further deepened the club’s ongoing struggles in the league. The loss extended a worrying winless streak that has plagued the team since December 2025, leaving supporters frustrated and raising serious questions about the club’s direction.
In an official statement released by the club, Marumo Gallants spokesperson Sello Nduna explained that the decision to suspend Lafitte was not solely related to results on the field.
“The suspension follows issues relating to a failure to comply with contractual duties,” Nduna said in the statement. “The club has also not been performing to the expected standard in recent fixtures. The club takes matters of governance, professionalism, and accountability very seriously.”
While the exact nature of the alleged contractual breaches has not yet been made public, the timing of the suspension strongly suggests that the club’s leadership reached a breaking point following the latest defeat.
Sources close to the club believe that tensions had been building behind the scenes for several weeks as results continued to deteriorate and internal frustrations grew within the management structure.
When Alexandre Lafitte arrived at Marumo Gallants at the beginning of the season, expectations were high. The young French coach was seen as an exciting appointment, particularly after replacing Abdeslam Ouaddou, who left the club to join Orlando Pirates.
Lafitte initially made a strong impression. His tactical ideas and energetic leadership helped Gallants embark on an impressive run in the Carling Knockout Cup, where the club reached the final.
Although Gallants ultimately lost 1–0 to Orlando Pirates in the final, the team’s performance in the competition was widely praised and gave supporters hope that the club could challenge strongly in domestic competitions.
However, the positive momentum did not last long.
In recent months, Gallants have struggled to maintain consistency in the Betway Premiership, with a string of disappointing results dragging the club down the standings. The team has now gone seven matches without a victory, putting significant pressure on Lafitte and his coaching staff.
As the results worsened, criticism from fans and analysts grew louder, with many questioning whether the inexperienced coach was capable of handling the demands of top-flight South African football.
