Gambia captain Omar Colley delivers complete performance in dominant Al Diriyah win

Omar Colley contributed on both ends for Saudi second tier club Al Diriyah as the The Gambia national team captain led his team to a 5-0 thrashing of Al Wehda on Wednesday evening.

The strong central defender found himself in a rare situation to strike in his club’s second goal with a low shot from distance. After controlling the first half but failing to find a goal, the hosts broke the Al Wehda resistance in severe fashion with five goals in the final half hour to extend their unbeaten run to five matches.

Advancing the ball towards the midfield in the 68th minute and passing to a teammate, Colley saw an opportunity to make a run forward and seized it. Retreating after an exchange of possession, the Gambian received a pass from Moussa Marega after the former Mali international won the ball back and the former Besiktas stopper displayed his technique with a well-struck shot to double the lead.

Oscar Rodriguez had previously given Diriyah the lead on the hour mark. The Spanish midfielder added a third goal for the hosts before Abdulaziz Al Faraj and Saleh Al Rahmani added insult to injury for Wehda with two late goals.

Signed on a free transfer following a brief spell at Greek club PAOK, Colley is proving to be a perfect addition to his new club. Offering leadership and physical dominance, he is leading a charge for promotion that has Diriyah in second place and on course to secure direct promotion to the Saudi Pro League from the First Division League (FDL).

Winning all five of his defensive duels, the 33-year-old also was excellent in his distribution duties as the visitors hardly got a sniff of the goal and were put under siege. Al Diryah will look to continue their winning ways next Monday when they travel to face Al Jandal.

A dominant second half seals emphatic win

Although Al Diriyah controlled possession throughout much of the first half, they struggled initially to turn their superiority into goals. Al Wehda sat deep and absorbed pressure, frustrating the hosts and limiting clear-cut chances before the break.

That resistance finally crumbled just after the hour mark when Oscar Rodriguez opened the scoring in the 60th minute. The goal lifted the pressure and opened the floodgates, triggering a devastating 30-minute spell in which Al Diriyah scored five unanswered goals.

Colley’s moment arrived eight minutes later in what was an unusual sight for a central defender. Advancing the ball into midfield and laying it off to a teammate, the Gambian sensed space ahead and continued his run. After briefly retreating as possession recycled, he was picked out by former Mali international Moussa Marega, who had won the ball back with strength and intelligence.

The former Besiktas defender showed impressive technique, striking a low, accurate shot from distance that left the goalkeeper with no chance and doubled Diriyah’s lead. It was a rare but memorable goal that highlighted Colley’s confidence and awareness.

Goals keep flowing as Wehda collapse

With Al Wehda visibly shaken, Al Diriyah pressed relentlessly. Rodriguez struck again to make it 3–0, capping an excellent individual performance from the Spanish midfielder. The hosts continued to dominate possession and territory, pinning their opponents deep and forcing repeated defensive errors.

Late goals from Abdulaziz Al Faraj and Saleh Al Rahmani completed the rout, sealing a comprehensive victory that reflected Diriyah’s superiority across all areas of the pitch.

Colley’s leadership shines through

Beyond his goal, Colley’s defensive contribution was arguably even more impressive. The 33-year-old won all five of his defensive duels, dominated aerial battles, and marshaled the back line with calm authority. Al Wehda rarely threatened, managing very few meaningful incursions into the final third as Diriyah kept them under constant pressure.

Colley also excelled in distribution, stepping out confidently from defense to initiate attacks and helping his side maintain a high tempo. His ability to combine physical dominance with composure on the ball has quickly made him a key figure in Diriyah’s promotion push.
