Algerian goalkeeper open to national team return after earlier retirement

USM Alger goalkeeper Oussama Benbot has opened the door for a return to the national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Benbot officially announced his retirement from the Algeria national team in January this year following his demotion to third-choice goalkeeper behind Luca Zidane and Anthony Mandrea.

With just over a month to go before the 2026 World Cup, Algeria is concerned about the situation of its goalkeepers.

While Luca Zidane was forced off injured on Sunday during Granada’s 4-2 loss against Almeria in the Spanish Segunda Division. Melvin Mastil, who underwent surgery for an inguinal hernia, is doubtful for the World Cup.

Mandrea is also ruled out after a shoulder injury sustained in training, which also required surgery.

With Algeria’s goalkeeping crisis deepened, Benbot could have an opportunity to man the post at the World Cup finals to be co-hosted by Mexico, Canada and USA. The 31-year-old indicated this after USMA’s qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup final.

“I will not say no and I will not turn my back on my country if Petkovic decides to call me up,” he said.

Benbot has made 14 appearances for USM Alger with 10 goals conceded and five clean sheets in this season’s Algeria Ligue 1.

He announced his international retirement after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where the Fennec Foxes exited at the quarter finals after a 0-2 loss to bronze medalists, Nigeria.

Algeria are paired in Group J alongside defending world champions Argentina, Jordan and Austria.
