The clash marks the third meeting between the two fierce rivals in just two months, highlighting the growing intensity of their rivalry during the 2025/26 campaign. Their first round NBC Premier league encounter ended in a goalless draw at the New Amaan Complex in Zanzibar, before Simba edged Yanga 1-0 in their most recent meeting in the Muungano Cup final.

With the NBC Premier League title race tightening, today’s fixture carries enormous significance. Yanga currently sit at the top of the table with 47 points from 19 matches, five ahead of second placed Simba, who have played the same number of games. With only a handful of matches remaining, the result could play a decisive role in determining the destination of the league crown.

Gonçalves discusses Yanga’s derby preparations

Speaking ahead of the encounter, Gonçalves revealed that his team has used the short preparation window to rethink their approach, insisting that the derby will be treated as a completely different contest from their previous meeting.

“We have had three days to prepare, and we are looking at this match in a completely different way. We will have a different plan compared to the last game because this is a different competition,” said the Yanga coach.

The Portuguese tactician expressed confidence in his squad’s readiness, noting that the players are motivated and fully focused on delivering a strong performance in front of their supporters.

“Today we complete our final preparations for tomorrow’s match, and we believe we will have a good game. I know we will be with our fans who will give us motivation to perform well. Every player is confident and ready to give everything to increase the points gap between us and second place,” he added.

Despite the confidence, Gonçalves acknowledged the magnitude of the challenge posed by Simba, emphasizing the need for improved concentration particularly after what he described as costly lapses in their last meeting.

“We are going to play against one of the biggest teams in the country, so we must increase our level of concentration. In the previous match, we were punished due to a lack of focus in the final minutes. Tomorrow we must improve in that aspect,” he explained.

He concluded by expressing belief in his team’s ability to rise to the occasion and secure maximum points in what he described as a defining fixture.

“I believe we will be better and get the three points in this important match,” said Gonçalves.

With both teams reporting fully fit squads and the stakes higher than ever, all eyes will be on Isamuhyo Stadium as Yanga seek redemption and aim to strengthen their grip on the title race.
