Gor Mahia FKF Premier League title charge suffers blow

Kenyan Premier League giants Gor Mahia saw their FKF Premier League title chase suffer a huge dent after they battled to a 1-1 draw against champions Kenya Police FC at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday.

The record Kenyan champions went into the game knowing a win would see them open a seven-point gap. This was after their closest rivals in second position AFC Leopards secured a 2-1 win against Mara Sugar to reduce the lead.

After a number of missed opportunities for both sides, it was the law enforcers who got the best chance of the game. Harambee Stars defender Aboud Omar delivered a superb free-kick which rattled the woodwork.

However, after the missed opportunity, Police took the lead in the 22nd minute. Brian Chonjo reacted quickly to a loose ball in Gor Mahia’s danger zone to slot it home past the goalkeeper.

Samuel Kapen almost levelled matters for Gor Mahia after he latched into a cross from Sharrif Musa, but his final finishing let him down. Gor Mahia kept pushing and Ebenezer Adukwaw saw his header saved by Daniel Ogembo for a corner.

Police went into the half-time break enjoying a 1-0 lead. At the start of the second half, it was Gor Mahia, who continued to attack Police FC.

However, they were forced to wait until the 87th minute to salvage a draw when Ebenezer Assifuah finished off a cross from Patrick Essombe. Despite the draw, Gor Mahia remained top with 65 points, while AFC Leopards are second with 8 points.

Gor Mahia have managed 19 wins, eight draws, and four defeats, while Leopards have 17 wins, seven draws, and six defeats.
