Indian Super League: Nsungusi Effiong scores in sixth consecutive match with Punjab FC

Nigerians continue to thrive in the Indian Super League and towering striker Nsungusi Effiong is on fire currently with Punjab FC. The well-traveled forward provided a goal and an assist in Monday’s 3-0 victory over Inter Kashi, making it three wins from Punjab’s last four matches.

Effiong on fire in Indian Super League

With experience in Denmark as well as the top divisions of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and most recently Romania, Effiong has adapted quickly to life in India with seven goals in seven league matches. He is now second in the league in scoring after his latest exploits.

Hosts Punjab FC dominated and ended the first half with a proper reward. Effiong skillfully maneuvered around a defender in the penalty area before laying a pass across the six-yard box to Samir Zeljković for a routine finish.

Shortly after halftime, the Nigerian got his goal with an easy finish following excellent work from Spanish playmaker Dani Ramirez. Effiong’s physical profile was too much for the Inter Kashi defense to handle, with the #9 dominating aerial duels and occupying defenders to create space for his teammates.

Compatriot Bede Osuji finished the scoring with a blast from distance to complete the decisive victory. Punjab now occupy 7th place, six points back of league leaders Mohun Bagan. The ISL is proceeding with a shortened season due to difficulties finding sponsors for the league, with close to nine rounds being completed out of thirteen rounds total this campaign.

Effiong is emerging as a star and it will be interesting to see where he ends up next season. Since leaving his native country for Ghanaian football with Tema-based Inter Allies, the 26-year-old has not enjoyed this level of stardom previously but is now a proven player in central Asia.
