Indian Super League: Stephen Eze muscles in the winner for Jamshedpur

Former Sunshine Stars defender Stephen Eze is firmly established as a top player in the Indian Super League and Jamshedpur FC’s defensive anchor made an impact on the other end Friday.

Eze did enough to force the ball over the line from Madih Talal’s excellent free kick delivery, giving the hosts a 1-0 victory against Inter Kashi at the JRD Tata Sports Complex in the eastern state of Jharkand.

The Nigerian defender’s strong performance, combined with a strong effort from goalkeeper Albino Gomes, completed the job for a clean sheet to maintain Jamshedpur’s perfect start to the 2026 season despite a 19th minute red card issued to Vincy Barretto.

The club have won all four of their matches so far, only conceding one goal. Despite finishing fifth and qualifying for the playoffs last season, The Men of Steel featured one of the worst defenses in the league but are displaying notable improvement.

An established Indian Super League star

Since arriving from Vietnamese club Quang Nam ahead of the 2024-25 campaign, Eze is imposing himself more and more as he adjusts to the Indian top flight. A strong presence who featured for Nigeria at the 2016 and 2018 editions of the African Nations Championship (CHAN), the 31-year-old is using his experience around the world of football to be a key player.

After leaving Nigeria Premier Football League club Kano Pillars in 2017 for Europe, his career has seen him play in Bulgaria, Croatia and Scotland. He previously spent the 2020-21 season with Jamshedpur before returning to the club, where the nearly two-meter tall defender has become a popular figure.

Eze and his club will return to action on March 15 with a duel away at NorthEast United in India’s far eastern Assam state.
