Jonah Ayunga set for surgery in injury blow for Kenya

Kenya national team striker Jonah Ayunga could miss the rest of the Scottish Premiership after he suffered an injury while playing for St Mirren.

The 28-year-old Harambee Star was taken off on a stretcher in the second half of the 2-0 loss against Livingston last weekend.

St Mirren have come out to confirm Ayunga suffered an anterior cruciate ligament during the defeat.

Jonah ruptured the ACL

“Jonah ruptured the ACL in his right knee,” said the club statement. “The 28-year-old will undergo surgery in the coming weeks and he will have our full support.

“Everyone at St Mirren wishes Jonah the very best in his recovery.”

Ayunga, who is out of contract at the end of the season, previously ruptured his ACL in January 2023, spending 10 months on the sidelines.

He joined the Paisley club four years ago and was a Hampden hero in this season’s League Cup final, netting a double in the 3-1 win over Celtic.

Ayunga debuted for Kenya in 2024

Ayunga has scored 18 goals in 108 appearances for St Mirren since joining the club from Morecambe in 2022. Ayunga started his career at Bridport Youth in 2007 and was in the squad for the Dorset County under-16s representative team.

In July 2015, Ayunga went on a trial at Dorchester Town and impressed the side in the pre-season. As a result, Ayunga was signed by Dorchester Town, signing a 12-month contract on 19 July 2015.

He made his Dorchester Town debut in the opening game of the season, scoring in a 3-0 win over Histon, followed up by scoring in a 4-2 win over Cirencester Town. By the time of his departure, Ayunga made 31 appearances, scoring seven times during his spell at the club.

Ayunga received his first call up to the Kenya national team in 2016, but did not make his debut in that camp. In March 2024, he earned a recall to the set-up.

He made his debut for the side in 2024 as a stoppage-time substitute during their 4-0 win over Malawi. In November 2024, Ayunga scored his first international goal for Kenya in a 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe.
