The post-match statistics may have shown Kaizer Chiefs in control of the ball, but co-coach Cedric Kaze has offered a damning assessment of their performance, labelling their play as “sterile” following a fourth consecutive loss.
Amakhosi’s season continued its downward spiral on Tuesday night as Richards Bay FC secured a 1-0 victory at the Umhlathuze Sports Complex. A 69th-minute strike from Thulani Gumede was enough to hand the Soweto giants their first away defeat of the league campaign and effectively end any lingering hopes of a title charge.
The Glamour Boys now sit in fifth place, trailing joint leaders Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns by a daunting 11 points. Coming on the heels of their CAF Confederation Cup exit at the hands of Zamalek SC, the mood at Naturena has shifted from optimism to crisis management.
Speaking to SuperSport TV after the final whistle, Kaze was blunt about why his side failed to break down the Natal Rich Boyz despite dominating the ball in the opening 45 minutes.
“It’s true that we had possession in the first half, but I would say it was a sterile possession without breaking lines,” Kaze admitted. “We were not threatening the opponent’s box.”
The Burundian tactician suggested that the squad’s current profile might be part of the problem, noting a lack of verticality in their attacking play.
“I think probably we had too many players that are ‘ballers’ and not enough runners behind the defensive line,” he explained.
In a desperate bid to find a breakthrough, the technical team turned to the bench at the interval. Glody Lilepo, Mduduzi Shabalala, and teenage sensation Luke Baartman were all introduced to add “bite” to the front line.
However, the gamble failed to pay off. Instead of finding the net, Kaizer Chiefs were caught out at the back, conceding the goal that would eventually seal their fate.
“We tried to correct that in the second half… but unfortunately, we concede a goal,” a dejected Kaze added, describing the current run as a “very bad moment.”
With the pressure mounting, Kaze has called for a united front to weather the storm. “I believe that it’s going to pass. But we need to stay together and work very hard,” he insisted.
The road to redemption doesn’t get any easier. Kaizer Chiefs have nearly two weeks to lick their wounds before welcoming Durban City FC to the FNB Stadium on Sunday, 15 March. For Kaze and his charges, nothing less than three points will suffice to quiet the growing chorus of disgruntled supporters.
