Petersen underwent the operation on Friday and was expected to be discharged from hospital on Monday; however, his return to action remains unclear, as recovery from such a procedure typically takes between three and six weeks.
Chiefs remain eager to rebuild and challenge once again at the summit of South African football.
The Soweto-based side previously monitored Nwabali during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. The goalkeeper impressed with a string of strong performances for the Super Eagles, helping Nigeria secure a bronze medal finish.
After leaving Chippa United earlier this year, the 29-year-old has remained without a club. This situation could soon change, with reports suggesting Chiefs have now submitted an offer to sign him on a permanent basis.
