After spending around $3 million USD on transfers during the January transfer window to make a run at the Libyan Premier League title, it would be a massive disappointment if Tripoli big spenders Al-Ittihad failed to qualify for CAF club competition next season. After a poor start in the Championship stage, Ittihad are back in the chase in the Tripoli-based West group after Monday's 2-1 victory over Ittihad Misurata.
Three of their January signings were involved with Kahraba, on loan from Egyptian giants Al Ahly, assisting Mauritania national team attacker Sidi Bouna Amar in the 21st minute before scoring the match winner on an assist from Moroccan midfielder Mohamed Zrida close to halftime. Kahraba now has six goals and four assists during his successful loan spell.
Former Uganda Premier League star forward Erick Kambale previously gave Ittihad Misurata the lead inside five minutes with a towering header but his club are now in last place in the group. Ittihad are now three points back of leaders and group favorites Al Ahli Tripoli but tied on eight points with Swehly SC for second place and a spot in the third place playoff.
CAF club competition is certainly in sight for Kahraba and Ittihad even if the CAF Confederation Cup is the more realistic objective. The league resumes on Wednesday with two matches from the Benghazi-based East group. Ittihad returns to action on Friday when they face Al Madina.
West Group Table (4 matches played)
Points | |
Al Ahli Tripoli | 11 |
Swehly SC | 8 |
Al-Ittihad | 8 |
Olympic Azzaweya | 6 |
Al Madina | 6 |
Ittihad Misurata | 5 |
The group winner qualifies for the 2025-26 CAF Champions League and a playoff against the winner of the East group to determine the Libyan Premier League champion.
The runners-up qualify for the third place playoff against the East group runners-up; the winner of the playoff qualifies for the 2025-26 CAF Confederation Cup.
