Mighty Wanderers wasted a penalty opportunity but still found a way to continue their recent dominance over bitter rivals FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, beating them 1-0 to lift Malawi’s NBS Charity Shield in Lilongwe on Saturday.
Cameroonian striker Thierry Tanjong scored the only goal of the match in the 48th minute to make up for the Nomads’ 15th minute wastage from the penalty spot. The reigning Super League champions have now made it four straight wins over their nemesis since last season.
In the first half, Wanderers who are also called the Nomads, had a chance to snatch an early lead. The People’s Team skipper Blessings Mpokera committed a foul in the box to gift the Nomads a penalty.
Wasted penalty opportunity
Experienced Wanderers attacker Isaac Kaliati stepped forward to take the penalty kick, but he sent his effort crashing against the point with goalkeeper Innocent Nyasulu getting a slight touch of the ball in the process.
Thereafter momentum swung in the way of Bullets who threatened to score through efforts from Yamikani Mologeni and Henry Chiwaya. To their credit, Wanderers custodian Chancy Mtete proved equal to the tasks with flying saves. Half-time ended goalless.
How Wanderers got their goal
Wanderers finally got their reward when Tanjong reacted the quickest to finish a rebound after keeper Nyasulu had punched an initial shot in the 48th minute.
The Charity Shield is the dress rehearsal for the 2026-2027 FDH Premiership season which gets underway on Saturday. Wanderers will be seeking to defend the league crown and Bullets gunning for an end to a two-year league drought.
