Mochudi Chiefs vow to spoil Gaborone United party

Mochudi Centre Chiefs FC have vowed to spoil the coronation party for Botswana league champions-elect Gaborone United when they clash on Monday.

The game will conclude the 2025-2026 FNB Premiership campaign with Sean Connor’s side having sealed their back-to-back title weeks ago when they took their tally to an unassailable 65 points. Gaborone United are 10 points ahead of second-placed Jwaneng Galaxy FC.

Such a tally is beyond the reach of second-placed Jwaneng Galaxy FC and third-placed Centre Chiefs, who have respectively maximum points of 56 and 58.

Ironically, the defending champions sealed retention of the FNB Premiership title last Saturday, the very same day they lost 0-2 to TAFIC FC.

Despite the fact that there is little to fight for, save for pride, coach Miguel Corral Torreira’s charges still want to put a blot on the Reds’ title celebrations at GU Stadium, according to their statement.

“We are not coming to watch the champions celebrate,” reads the statement. “We are going to shut it down. Keep the champagne on ice. The party gets cancelled at kick-off.”

Stanton Fredericks-owned Mochudi Chiefs can leapfrog Galaxy from the second position with a win over United.

Mochudi Chiefs are smarting from an away 1-0 loss to ORAPA United last weekend; hence, they want to bounce back, according to Torreira.

“We need to show another face in the league and in the cup. We must be ready for the next match…In these kinds of matches, you need to play with high intensity all 90 minutes,” he said.
