Moustapha Djimet scored the opening goal and assisted the second as Dinamo Minsk took a big step towards the Belarusian Cup final with Wednesday’s 2-0 semifinal first leg victory at ML Vitebsk.
After a tight first half that featured few opportunities, the visitors from the Belarusian capital finally punched past their fellow top flight side.
In the 71st minute, Central African Republic international Djimet gave his team the breakthrough they needed with an individual effort. After a clearance from the Vitebsk defense went high into the air to the corner of the penalty area, the imposing forward took the ball down and muscled off a defender before firing in a low volley.
Despite the introduction of attacking substitutes, hosts Vitebsk could not find a goal for themselves and Dinamo doubled their lead in the 81st minute. Djimet arrived at the near post to flick a corner kick to the far post, where Karen Vardanyan was waiting to apply the final touch.
It is early in the Belarusian season but Dinamo Minsk are off and running. They have won all three of their top flight league fixtures and appear to be headed to the cup final if they can finish the job at home in the second leg on April 4.
