Semenyo flies flag for Africa in Premier League nominations

A day after helping Manchester City keep their Premier League title hopes alive, Antoine Semenyo has received a big recognition.

The Ghana national team striker is the only African nominated for the 2025-2026 Premier League’s EA Sports Player of the Season Award.

Semenyo, who joined City last January, has made the eight-member shortlist alongside teammate Erling Halaand.

Semenyo’s contribution this season

The 26-year-old Black Stars forward is earmarked for the accolade owing to his impressive haul of 16 goals and 4 assists from 35 league matches this season. The tally includes goals scored while at Bournemouth FC.

The public vote is now open, and the winner will be announced at 11am GMT on 23 May.

Other Premier League nominees

The rest of the nominees include David Raya (Spain), Arsenal’s Declan Rice and Nottingham Forest FC’s Morgan Gibbs-White (both England), Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United, Portugal) and also South American nomineese including Igor Thiago (Brentford FC) and Gabriel (Arsenal), both Brazilians.

The Black Stars winger made the shortlist on Thursday a day after scoring for the Citizens alongside Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush and Savinho in their 3-0 whitewash of Crystal Palace on Wednesday, 13 May 2026.

The maximum points took City side to within two points of Arsenal, each with two games to go in the run in.

Mikel Arteta’s charges will finish the season with assignments against Crystal Palace and Burnley while Pep Guardiola’s side will take on Aston Villa and Bournemouth FC.

Matters are not in the hands of the Citizens, as Arsenal can seal their first league title in 22 years if they just win their remaining games.
