Le Havre midfielder Sofiane Boufal has given his honest opinion about his chances of playing with Morocco at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 32-year-old has regained his form since joining Le Havre from Belgium Jupiler Pro League club, Union St Gilloise earlier this year.
When asked about the prospect of playing at the World Cup with the Atlas Lions, Boufal adopted a clear stance.
“I didn’t sign here to play in the World Cup. I don’t wake up thinking I have to go to the World Cup. We’re here to talk about HAC, not Morocco.”
For the former Angers player, only club performance should dictate what comes next.
If the opportunity arises, he will seize it, but without becoming fixated on the World Cup.
Boufal has made 13 Ligue 1 appearances with a goal and three assists to his credit this season.
Regarding the next steps in his career, the France born isn’t ruling anything out.
An extension with Le Havre remains a possibility, but everything will depend on how the season ends.
“I’m very happy here. But we can’t talk about the future without having achieved our goal.”
The former Lille, Southampton, Celta Vigo, Angers and Al Rayyan midfielder has 49 caps with eight goals scored.
Boufal and his teammates made history and became the first African nation ever to reach the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Morocco are paired in Group C alongside record holders Brazil, Haiti ane Scotland for the tournament to be co-hosted by Mexico, Canada and USA.
