DR Congo winger Théo Bongonda is set for a new chapter elsewhere after announcing his departure from Spartak Moscow.
Bongonda, 30, has spent three seasons at the Lukoil Arena after joining the Russian side from Spanish second tier club Cadiz in 2023.
Taking to his Instagram page, the former Genk winger expressed gratitude for the moment spent with the Gladiators with a new adventure in the offing.
“One chapter closes, another opens. We came to do what we had to do,” he wrote.
“Not interested in what people think or say, thank you @fcsm_official for these 3 years, respect.
“No hard feelings at the end. At the end of the day, everyone goes home.
“We continue to move forward as we always have. Glory to God. On to the next one.”
Bongonda represented Belgium at the U-19 and the U-21 levels before switching allegiance to play for the DR Congo in 2022.
He was a member of the Leopards the exited the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations at the round of 16 stage.
He played four matches with a goal as the side lost 1-0 against Algeria in the 1/6 stage.
The 37 time capped with seven goals, previously played for Zulte Waregem, Celta Vigo, Trabzonspor, Genk and Cadiz before joining Spartak Moscow.
His lack of playing time this season where he has managed just four appearances in the Premier Liga sparked discussion about his exit.
The current situation could fuel difficulties in his chances of making the coach Sebastien Desabre’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Leopards are paired in Group K alongside Portugal, Uzbekistan and Colombia for the World Cup to be co-hosted by Mexico, Canada and USA.
