Ghana’s U-20 Africa Cup of Nations campaign began on a slow note in Suez when the team had to rally from a goal down to draw 1-1 with DR Congo on Friday, May 2.
DR Congo showed grit and energy from the blast of the whistle, stunning the former World Champions early in the first half when Sampdoria winger, Samuel Ntanda-Lukisa headed home the opener.
The Black Satellites, however, recovered quickly from the scare to pull level on the 24th minute mark. Emmanuel Mensah swept a through ball into the Congolese penalty area, before Aziz Musibau showed great composure to poke in the equaliser. The contest eventually ended 1-1.
Speaking in his post-match interview, coach Desmond Ofei stated that Ghana remains in contention for qualification to the knockout stage, stressing that Group C remains open.
“We should have finished our chances. The group is open, and we will fight for qualification,” the Ghana U20 head coach said.
In the other Group C game played on Friday, Senegal drew 1-1 with the Central African Republic. It means that all four teams in the Group are on one point after the first round of games.
Ghana’s Black Satellites will take on defending Champions Senegal on May 5, while DR Congo will take on Central African Republic in their next matches.
