Flying Eagles head coach Aliyu Zubairu has hailed the character, composure and tactical discipline of his players after Nigeria overcame Senegal in Monday's dramatic quarterfinal to book a place in the semifinals of the 2025 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, earning a third consecutive qualification to the FIFA U-20 World Cup on Monday.

In a gripping contest at the Suez Canal Stadium in Ismailia, Nigeria and defending champions Senegal battled to a goalless draw across 120 minutes. The tension soared in the penalty shootout, where Nigeria held firm to win 3-1 thanks in part to a heroic display by goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt.

Zubairu, visibly proud of his side’s performance, attributed the victory to detailed preparation and unwavering belief.

“We trained for this moment. Every possible scenario was prepared for including penalties,” he said. “The boys stuck to the plan and executed it when it mattered most. That’s what champions do.”

The Flying Eagles maintained an unbeaten record through the group stage and Zubairu underlined the team’s growing confidence and unity as key ingredients behind their success.

“This is a significant win for Nigeria, but we’re not done yet,” he stated. “Our primary objectives were to qualify for the World Cup and fight for the AFCON title. One goal is achieved now we focus on the next.”

This result marks back-to-back qualifications for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, reinforcing the nation’s stature as a powerhouse in African youth football. Reflecting on his players' development, Zubairu emphasized their growth throughout the tournament:

“They’ve matured with each match — not just tactically, but mentally and emotionally as well. That’s the essence of youth development, and I’m incredibly proud of them all.”

With momentum on their side, Nigeria will now gear up for a crucial semifinal clash against either South Africa or DR Congo as they continue their pursuit of an eighth U-20 AFCON crown.
