World Cup: Cape Verde coach Bubista favors veterans in final squad list

The Blue Sharks of Cape Verde are ready for their debut World Cup finals appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and head coach Bubista has announced his final roster for the tournament co-hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States.

There are not too many surprises from the coach, who has included many of the veteran players responsible for the island nation’s surprise qualification. Defensive cornerstones such as goalkeeper and vice-captain Vozinha are among the names as well as Irish-based center back Roberto “Pico” Lopes and defender Steven Moreira of Columbus Crew.

The veterans are joined by younger stars like Villarreal defender Logan Costa and versatile option João Paulo. Benfica right back Sidny Lopes Cabral may well be the most impactful with his attacking ability adding a threat from the flank.

Russia-based defensive midfielder Wagner Pina and veteran playmaker Jamiro Monteiro are names to watch in the midfield, which appears to be the department where the Blue Sharks could be a bit weak.

Plenty of experience in Cape Verde attack for World Cup

The attack appears strong and is where Bubista is bringing some of his most experienced players, including captain and forward Ryan Mendes. Another veteran, Garry Rodrigues, has played his way back into the team at the age of 35 after recently returning to contention. The explosive but temperamental winger had not featured throughout 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.

Jovane Cabral, who plays for Portuguese Primeira Liga side Estrela Amadora, is another explosive attacker who will be a weapon and Helio Varela is a player with similar traits. Completing the attacking corps is a group of efficient finishers including Berchimol, qualifying star Dairon Livramento and bruising striker Nuno da Costa as well as in form striker Willy Semedo.

Cape Verde stunned Group D favorites Cameroon to claim first place and direct qualification to the World Cup finals from the CAF region. They are in Group H at the tournament and will begin play on June 15 against group favorites Spain before facing Uruguay and Saudi Arabia.
