The Zambian Premier League (ZPL) has secured a $1million-per season television broadcasting deal with TopStar Communications Limited.
A statement from ZPL says the contract is for five years and includes an additional $42,000 (960,000 Zambia Kwacha) sponsorship for the ZPL Annual Awards.
The deal caters for the broadcasting of matches for the top-flight MTN Super League on the TopStar Mobile App, Sun Sport, ZNBC TV3, Sports Focus, and StarTimes.
The matches will be beamed across Zambia, East Africa, West Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe.
The statement says ZPL shall get a share of advertising revenue and 80 percent revenue of any additional business Topstar shall source.
Reacting to the development, ZPL Chief Executive Office, Mr. Joseph Chimpampwe, described the sponsorship as a landmark.
“This agreement marks a new era in football broadcasting, opening greater access for fans while creating opportunities for commercialisation, sponsorship, and international recognition of Zambian talent,” he said.
The Football Association of Zambia president, Keith Mweemba, also said the broadcasting deal was a step in the right direction for the country’s football commercialization drive.
“As FAZ we are excited at the new partnership with TopStar which signals a new chapter in our game. TopStar did not hesitate to heed our call at a time when we went into the market looking for a new broadcasting partner,” he is quoted as saying.
“We are also happy that this deal does not close out all other participants in the broadcast space. Going forward, you will see other players taking up space in the broadcast sphere while addressing exclusivity issues in line with CCPC Act Number 24 of 2010 Articles 8, 9 and 10.”
The official launch of the agreement is scheduled for 5th September 2025. This partnership will start in week two of the 2025/26 MTN Super League season.
Power Dynamos are the current defending champions of the 18-member league which got underway two weeks ago.
