Akonnor calls for fairness in Gor Mahia FKF Premier League title pursuit

Kenyan Premier League giants Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor has urged authorities in charge of FKF Premier League to provide fairness to all top-flight clubs as the league enters the penultimate stage.

The Ghanaian legend was reacting to K’Ogalo’s latest 1-0 defeat against Tusker FC which denied the record Kenyan champions a chance to move five points clear at the top of the 18-team league table.

During the game, Gor Mahia also complained of a penalty which was not given. With AFC Leopards breathing behind their back, Akonnor has sounded a warning to those in charge of the league.

‘FKF league must be protected’

“We are not making excuses, but there must be fairness. The league must protect the game and the players,” said Akonnor as quoted by the Star.

“If we want to grow this league, we must ensure that matches are played under proper conditions. That is the only way to maintain integrity.”

Akonnor further complained of the pitch which hosted the fixture: “The pitch was dangerous. It was bumpy and unpredictable, making it very difficult for us to play our normal game.

“When you prepare a team to play quality football and then bring them to such a surface, it changes everything. It should not be allowed.”

Gor Mahia remained top with 57 points

Gor Mahia assistant coach Kobi Bismarck Mensah echoed Akonnor’s sentiments while blaming the condition of Wang’uru Stadium for the defeat.

“This is not football. How did this pitch get approved to host league matches?” Mensah posed, his frustration evident as he dissected what he termed as a compromised playing surface.

He added: “They (Tusker) train at top facilities like Kasarani, but then bring us to a pitch like this. You have to ask yourself why?”

Mensah continued: “Why did they do that if they didn’t have bad intentions? These are questions that must be asked?”

Despite the defeat, Gor Mahia remained top with 57 points from 27 matches. They are two points ahead of AFC Leopards, who have amassed 55 points.
