Gor Mahia title hopes suffer blow after Tusker FC defeat

Kenyan Premier League giants Gor Mahia suffered a huge blow in their quest to reclaim the FKF Premier League after going down 1-0 against Tusker FC in a rescheduled fixture at Wang’uru Stadium in Mwea on Tuesday.

The record Kenyan champions went into the game seeking to extend their lead against rivals AFC Leopards to five points. Gor Mahia were sitting at the top with 57 points, two more than second-placed AFC Leopards.

However, Gor Mahia were not able to increase the gap as Tusker under coach Julien Mette had other ideas. Tanzanian striker Ibrahim Joshua scored what turned out to be the winner in the first half.

Gor Mahia’s unbeaten run came to an end

The defeat was the fourth for a Gor Mahia side, who are seeking to reclaim the FKF Premier League title they lost to Kenya Police FC last season. The defeat further ended Gor Mahia’s 16-match unbeaten run in the top-flight.

Tusker started the game with urgency and should have taken the lead when Joshua missed an opportunity in the seventh minute. Gor Mahia responded with Shariff Musa, missing a good chance to break the deadlock.

Another great chance fell to Gor Mahia in the 15th minute when Musa combined with Patrick Esombe before setting through Ebenezer Assifuah. However, the Ghanaian import, who has been on form for the club, hit his effort wide.

Tusker took the lead when Joshua reacted quickly to a rebound ball from Gad Mathews. The Gor Mahia keeper had tried to save a superb effort from Ian Simiyu, but he punched the ball back to play, finding the unmarked Joshua, who hit the back of the net.

Gor Mahia will next face Bandari FC

In the second half, Gor Mahia felt they were denied a penalty when Patrick Esombe was brought down inside the box, but the referee waved play on.

With time running out, Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor looked to the bench to try inject some fresh legs. Samuel Kapen and Ebenezer Adukwaw were summoned to replace Paul Ochuoga and the injured Musa.

The defeat left Gor Mahia top with 57 points from 27 matches while Tusker jumped two places up to seventh with 40 points from 27 matches.

Gor Mahia will next come up against Bandari FC on Sunday, April 19, while the Brewers will come up against relegation-threatened Sofapaka on Saturday, April 18.
