Ahead of the match, Chirwa had insisted that Wanderers’ dominance over them was in the past. However, this proved not to be the case during the match at Bingu National Stadium.
Asked about his post-match remarks, Chirwa said: “When going to war, you don’t say you will be defeated. I said those remarks because I was encouraging my team to work hard. They worked hard and the only difference is that our counterparts scored a goal. The team is there, but we just need to push here and there.”
Wanderers assistant coach McDonald Mtetemera hailed his players for sticking to the game-plan and executing it well.
“I am very happy with the result, and I thank the players for their effort. This win has motivated us. I believe we can do great things this season,” he said.
The Nomads wasted a penalty opportunity but still found a way to continue their recent dominance over bitter rivals on Saturday.
Cameroonian striker Thierry Tanjong scored the only goal of the match in the 48th minute to make up for the Nomads’ 15th minute wastage from the penalty spot.
The reigning Super League champions have now made it four straight wins over their nemesis since last season.
In the first half, Wanderers who are also called the Nomads, had a chance to snatch an early lead. The People’s Team skipper Blessings Mpokera committed a foul in the box to hand the Nomads a penalty.
Experienced attacker Isaac Kaliati stepped forward to take the penalty kick, but he sent his effort crashing against the point with goalkeeper Innocent Nyasulu getting a slight touch of the ball in the process.
Thereafter momentum swung in the way of Bullets who threatened to score through efforts from Yamikani Mologeni and Henry Chiwaya but Wanderers custodian Chancy Mtete proved equal to the task with flying saves. Half-time ended goalless.
Wanderers finally got their reward when Tanjong reacted the quickest to finish a rebound after keeper Nyasulu had punched an initial shot.
The Charity Shield is the dress rehearsal for the 2026-2027 FDH Premiership season which gets underway on Saturday. Wanderers will be seeking to defend the league crown and Bullets gunning for an end to a two-year league drought.
