Mweene tips Zambian clubs on CAF competitions

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeping coach Kennedy Mweene has tipped Zambian teams on the formula for success in CAF inter-club competitions.

Kennedy Mweene has advised MTN Super League teams in Zambia that consistency is the ingredient for success in CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup.

Zambian top-flight league teams Power Dynamos and ZESCO United participated in the 2025-2026 CAF inter club tournaments.

Dynamos and ZESCO United performance

However, while Dynamos impressed before bowing out from the group stage, for ZESCO United the performance was below par. The power men registered just one victory in the group stage before bowing out.

In this context, Mweene urged Zambian clubs to strive for consistent qualification in the continental competitions to gain experience.

The Zambia national team goalkeeping coach stressed that regular exposure in CAF tournaments is key to long term success.

“It doesn’t come overnight,” he told Sports Day on ZNBC Radio 4 during the week. “Zambian teams must try to be in CAF competitions year in, year out to gain experience. That is where players learn a lot.”

Mweene and Sundown success

The 2012 Africa Cup of Nations winner added that the teams in Zambia should strive for reaching the group stage at bare minimum.

“The most important thing is to fight and reach the group stage, because that is where the real experience comes from,” Mweene said.

“I can see Power Dynamos are doing well. If they win the league and go into CAF competitions again, it will be their second consecutive year. That experience will be very important,” he said.

Mweene is speaking from experience having played a key role in Sundowns squad that won the 2016 CAF Champions League title for the first and last time.

The Betway Premiership holders have since reached the final of the continental league for the second consecutive year.
