World governing body FIFA have broken their silence following the decision by National Executive Members (NEC) of the Football Kenya Federation to suspend their President Hussein Mohammed with immediate effect on Friday.
The decision, which was reached on Friday, saw NEC member Abdullahi Yussuf Ibrahim and acting CEO Dennis Gicheru also ordered to step aside to allow for investigations into the allegations.
Latest on FKF: FIFA has written to FKF informing the federation that it’s currently reviewing this week’s events where President Hussein Mohamed, acting SG Dennis Gicheru and a nominated NEC member were asked to step aside.

Hussein was expected to issue a comprehensive response on “the CHAN insurance story” and other allegations put against his administration before the NEC members went ahead of him to make the decision.
According to multiple reports, the controversy stems from a high-value insurance arrangement for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which was co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania on February 25th.
The reports further indicated that FKF awarded a contract worth KSh 42,406,815 to a recently registered company, despite receiving more competitive offers from well-known insurers.
“In this context, and for the purposes of this ongoing assessment, we kindly request the cooperation of the FKF National Executive Committee in providing information and documentation enabling us to verify whether the process leading to the provisional dismissal of the above-mentioned officials was conducted in accordance with the FKF Statutes, in particular Articles 38, 40 and 41 thereof,” read part of the statement from FIFA to FKF.
“Confirmation, together with supporting documentation where applicable, that the FKF President, Mr Hussein Rashid Mohammed, Mr Abdullahi Yusuf Ibrahim and Mr Dennis Gicheru were each allowed to defend themselves before the adoption of the Resolution.”
Apart from asking Mohammed to step aside, the NEC members picked former Kenya national team Harambee Stars midfielder Macdonald Mariga to serve as the acting President with immediate effect.
The resolution cited Article 40 of the FKF Constitution, stating a written resolution supported by a majority of NEC members is legally valid and carries the same authority as decisions made in a formal sitting.
FIFA’s involvement signals serious concern over governance standards within Kenyan football. Historically, FIFA has taken strict action against member associations that violate statutes or political and administrative independence rules.
