Egypt national team director Ibrahim Hassan has confirmed Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah will miss the rest of the season after suffering a hamstring injury in a 3-1 Premier League win over Crystal Palace.
Salah was forced off in the 59th minute during Liverpool’s 3-1 victory at Anfield, after sustaining a muscle injury. He waved to supporters before heading straight down the tunnel, sparking speculation about a premature farewell.
While Liverpool were not sure of the extent of Salah’s injury, Hassan has confirmed the 33-year-old Egyptian winger had played his last game for the reds.
“He has suffered a hamstring tear and will require four weeks of treatment,” Hassan told Reuters as quoted by Flashscore.
However, Hassan said Salah will be fit for the 2026 World Cup, where Egypt will face Belgium, New Zealand and Iran in Group G.
Speaking after the game, Liverpool manager Arne Slot offered an update on the injury that forced Salah from the field during the second half.
Asked whether he had played his last game for Liverpool, Slot responded: “We don’t know, that’s the best answer I can give because if I say it might be a chance then probably all the headlines are, ‘there might be a chance…’
“We simply don’t know but what we do know is the season is in four weeks over, so there are not a lot of games being played. We have to wait and see how his injury is and if he is able to return to play.
“What I do know about Mo is throughout all of these years he has taken such good care of his body that he will have the minimum time required to recover from an injury.
“Let’s hope for the best and that he is available in the last part [of the season].”
Salah had already confirmed in March he will leave Liverpool at the end of the current campaign, bringing an extraordinary nine-year spell to a close.
Since arriving in 2017, Salah has become one of the club’s greatest-ever players, playing a pivotal role in winning the Premier League (twice), three League Cups, the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, FA Cup, and the Community Shield.
