Orlando Pirates ensured the Betway Premiership title race remains on a knife-edge after a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Stellenbosch FC at a vibrant, capacity Athlone Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Buccaneers’ triumph narrows the gap at the summit to just two points, placing immense pressure on leaders Mamelodi Sundowns ahead of their high-stakes midweek clash against Kaizer Chiefs. While Sundowns still have the advantage, Pirates have done their part to ensure the Brazilians cannot yet celebrate a ninth consecutive league crown.
Pirates started with the intent of a side knowing only three points would suffice. Despite early offside frustrations for Evidence Makgopa and Relebohile Mofokeng, the visitors dominated the territorial battle.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 42nd minute. After winning a free-kick in a dangerous area, Patrick Maswanganyi turned provider, whipping in a pinpoint delivery that found Evidence Makgopa. The striker rose highest in the centre of the box to steer a clinical header into the bottom right corner, silencing the home crowd.
With Stellenbosch still reeling, Pirates struck a devastating second blow in first-half stoppage time. Mofokeng, a constant thorn in the Stellies’ side, turned playmaker to find Maswanganyi outside the area. The midfield maestro unleashed a superb left-footed strike that nestled into the bottom left corner, sending the Buccaneers into the break with a comfortable 2-0 cushion.
Stellenbosch, who lost Thapelo Mokobodi to an early injury in the 31st minute, attempted to ring the changes at half-time by introducing Ashley Cupido and Vuyolwethu Andries. However, the Pirates’ defence, led by the composed Nkosinathi Sibisi and Kamogelo Sebelebele, remained largely untroubled.
The home side’s best chance of the second period fell to Wonderboy Makhubu in the 48th minute, but his close-range effort was bravely blocked. At the other end, Thalente Mbatha almost added a third for the Soweto giants with a long-range effort that whistled just past the top corner in the 70th minute.
And in the closing stages, tensions rose as Stellenbosch desperately clawed their way back into the contest. The home side came agonisingly close to reducing the deficit in the 77th minute when Genino Palace struck the left post from point-blank range following a dangerous cross from Devin Titus.
Sensing the shift in momentum, Stellies opted for a double substitution in the 81st minute, introducing Faiz Abrahams and Henri Stanic to bolster their late charge. However, Pirates remained a threat on the counter-attack; just two minutes later, Mofokeng nearly put the game to bed, narrowly missing a header from the centre of the box after a lightning-fast break orchestrated by Appollis.
In a highly physical encounter, both sides continued to push for a goal as tackles flew in, yet the scoreline remained unchanged at 2-0.
The result moves Abdeslam Ouaddou’s men to 62 points from 27 matches. The focus now shifts to Pretoria on Wednesday, where Pirates will be hoping their arch-rivals, Kaizer Chiefs, can do them a massive favour by taking points off Sundowns in a sold-out encounter.
With less than three games remaining in the season, the math is simple for Pirates: keep winning and hope the “Brazilians” slip up in the final stretch.
