The Glamour Boys head to Pretoria tonight for the 19:30 CAT Betway Premiership tie, looking to throw a massive spanner in the works of Sundowns’ pursuit of a ninth successive league crown. While the Chloorkop-based outfit currently holds a two-point lead at the summit, the shadow of a relentless Orlando Pirates looms large—and Cele insists Chiefs aren’t there to make up the numbers.
Sundowns enter the clash in imperious form following back-to-back victories over Polokwane City FC, but Cele believes the pressure of a genuine title race makes the leaders vulnerable.
“If you look at recent history, they have been dominating… especially the league,” Cele told the Amakhosi media. “Now they have someone they are competing with, which is our rival, Orlando Pirates.
“Things are interesting for South African football at the moment. Of course, they are going to want to clinch this title again, but we might as well spoil the party for them.”
While the title is a two-horse race between Sundowns (64 points) and Pirates (59 points with a game in hand), the stakes for Chiefs are equally massive. Amakhosi are locked in their own “journey” to secure a third-place finish and a subsequent ticket to the CAF Confederation Cup.
For Cele and the Naturena-based giants, Wednesday isn’t just about being a “spoiler” for their rivals—it’s a crucial step in reclaiming their own status among the continent’s elite.
With Sundowns gunning for a record-extending ninth star, Chiefs have made it clear: if there’s a party planned in Tshwane, they intend to crash it.
