Mamelodi Sundowns saw their lead at the top of the Betway Premiership cut to just three points on Wednesday night after a gruelling 1-1 draw against Kaizer Chiefs.
While the result helps Amakhosi solidify their hold on third place after 27 games, the real winners of the evening were Orlando Pirates. The second-placed Buccaneers now sit within striking distance of the summit with a crucial game in hand, thanks to their arch-rivals Chiefs taking two points off the defending champions.
Pirates are on 62 points after 27 games, while Sundowns are on 65 points after 28 games, as the race seems to be going down to the wire.
The atmosphere at a sold-out Loftus Versfeld was less like a football match and more akin to a battlefield. Tempers flared from the opening whistle, and the physical toll was immediate. Two players were forced off on stretchers in a bruising first half: Sundowns’ defender Keanu Cupido was replaced by Grant Kekana in the 17th minute, and Chiefs’ Mduduzi Shabalala was withdrawn just before the break after a series of uncompromising challenges.
Despite the loss of Shabalala, it was Chiefs who struck first. In the 25th minute, Shabalala—before his injury—turned creator with a perfectly weighted through-ball that found Flávio Silva. The striker kept his composure to slot a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner, giving the visitors a shock lead.
Sundowns emerged for the second half with renewed intent, and their persistence paid off in the 54th minute. Substitute Thapelo Morena made an instant impact, delivering a cross that Brayan Léon bundled home from very close range to level the scores.
However, the Brazilians’ momentum was halted just ten minutes later. Jayden Adams, who had already been booked in the first half, was shown a second yellow card for simulation in the 64th minute. Forced to play the final 26 minutes with ten men, Sundowns had to balance their search for a winner with the need to avoid a costly defeat.
The closing stages were a frantic affair. Aubrey Modiba and Teboho Mokoena both tried their luck from distance, while Chiefs’ former Sundowns star Gastón Sirino forced the home defence into several desperate clearances. In the 86th minute, Sundowns threw on Peter Shalulile in a final attempt to snatch all three points, but the Amakhosi backline held firm.
For Sundowns, this represents two dropped points in a high-stakes title race. For Chiefs, it is a point of pride and stability. But for those in the black and white of Orlando Pirates, the result is the perfect invitation to turn the title race into a final-week thriller.
